Glacier National Park , Montana -
What is there to do in Glacier National Park? Where is it located? In this article, I will answer both of these questions and more.
Glacier National Park is located in Montana and is quite close to the Canadian border. In fact, there is another park in Canada that falls under the exact same name. This is actually a completely different park so try not to mix the two up.
Glacier National Park is a large park that is full of different activities for you to enjoy. Photographers will appreciate the wildlife and the beautiful natural landscapes that encapsulate the park. But normal tourists will also find an assortment of fun activities to do.
The Going to the Sun Road is fun and albeit scary. This road goes high up into the mountains, and it is quite narrow at times. There is plenty of wildlife to observe, and glaciers as well.
When I visited last, I was actually able to step out of the car and stand on a glacier. I couldn't help but fear that the glacier would suddenly break apart, and drag me down the mountain with it. However, the experience was priceless. How many people can say that they have stood on a glacier?
While you're traversing the Going to the Sun Road you will cross the Continental Divide, which is also known as the Great Divide in the United States. The Continental Divide basically separates the Atlantic ocean waters from the Pacific ocean waters.
I never really noticed when we crossed the Continental Divide because I was too preoccupied with the sights and the precipitous drop off that was about a foot from the car. Oh, and there isn't always a guard rail next to the road either so drive carefully. You definitely don't want to drink and drive here.
Lakes, rivers, and waterfalls abound in this park. You can also listen to stories told by Native Americans, or just sit back and enjoy the view. And as I mentioned above, there is a large amount of wildlife to be seen in this park. Some of the wildlife that inhabits this park includes bears, goats, deer, elk, and much more.
As for reservations, you do not have to make any. You can if you want, but you don't have to. However, there is an entrance fee that you have to pay. The park is also open year round, but it may close temporarily if there's bad weather(such as a snowstorm).
If you decide to go camping, make sure that you're careful with your food. Bears will sometimes lurk near camp sites and steal any food that might be laying about. Some people even have to hang their food high up in the trees to prevent the bears from eating it.
Other stuff you can do in the park is fly fish, go kayaking, shop for souvenirs, hike; the list goes on and on. It's a great place to visit. But be sure you bring a jacket because the weather is unpredictable. You should be safe if it's the summer, but it does occasionally snow in the early summer months. I should know, my mom and I had to leave early because we didn't anticipate it snowing in June.
In conclusion, Glacier National Park is a great place to visit. Whether you are going on a family trip or just want to see something new, this park may be just what you are looking for.
